Canadian airlines set for bankruptcy

Obese have right to two airline seats (in Canada)

Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday… people who are “functionally disabled by obesity” deserve to have two seats for one fare.

WHAT?! Oh… my… goodness. Fat people are fat because they choose to eat too much. Make them go on a diet if they want to travel. Granted, this helps people who can fit reasonably into one seat, too, by not forcing them to sit next to someone who doesn’t fit in THEIR seat, thereby squishing the person who DOES fit in their own seat. But for goodness sake, why does it have to be their RIGHT? Maybe we should try to do something to pare down the obesity rate — make it HARDER to be obese, not easier. It’s just a thought.

Hmmm… Maybe we should have designated seats for the larger among us, much like there are handicapped seats? Limit it to two obese people per flight. And what I want to know, is when these people reserve their tickets, do they have to tell the ticket agent, “Hey, by the way, I weigh 400 lbs, so I’m going to need two seats?” And if they do, what’s to stop a normal sized person from saying THEY are larger in order to get a “spacer” seat so no one sits next to them? I mean, that honestly sounds like a good idea; I might try it for MY next flight (within Canada, anyway).

Guns don’t kill people, people kill… wait, what?

Dad accused of killing daughter while cleaning gun

Ok, so technically if the guy wasn’t doing double shots of vodka, he probably wouldn’t have shot her. But you have to make a choice! Do you want the gun or the vodka?

All joking aside, though, that’s a rough situation.

Kinda sad to be white

November 17, 2008 at 1:12 pm (Uncategorized)

After Obama’s win, white backlash festers in US

I’m kinda sad to be lumped into that group… you know, the white one.

Ohhh, Shakespeare, you were so wise (replace Jew with African American, or whatever race you want):

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
from Act III, Scene 1

To bait fish withal: if it feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies; and what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge! If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge! The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

Quit trying to control me!

November 17, 2008 at 1:07 pm (Uncategorized)

Hollywood out of step with American morals?

You know, I’m going to skip over all the stuff I REALLY want to say about the religion issue and jump right to this one:

Nearly 40% support the notion that “dangerous ideas should be banned from public school libraries,” and nearly the same number disagree with the statement that “censoring books is an old-fashioned idea.”

GOD FORBID we teach our children to THINK. GOD FORBID we teach them that some people’s views may conflict with their own! What a horrendous notion to think that a child might pick up a book, read it, and disagree with it completely. We all know that children are automatons with no capability for rational thought, right?

I am proud to be an American because I have the opportunity to READ what I choose to read, to think what I choose to think, and to say what I think needs to be said. By the mere notion of categorizing some thoughts or ideas as “dangerous”, we are removing those freedoms from our children. For the love of all that is holy, people, if you don’t what your kids reading Superfudge, tell them not to read it. And if they do read it and you find out, have an honest and frank discussion with them about WHY it is in conflict with your belief system. Don’t just disallow all children to read it! Some of the people out there don’t think that ideas can be dangerous if discussed honestly and intelligently.

What I’m trying to say is QUIT trying to CONTROL me and QUIT trying to CONTROL my kids! Learn to be a parent and teach your children to THINK.

I have mixed emotions

November 5, 2008 at 1:17 pm (Election 2008, Politics)

I’m so happy that Barack Obama won the election. I saw McCain as four more years of the same, and it really hasn’t been working out so well. Not to mention that crazy lady he chose as his running mate. I think even he began to regret that towards the end. Only time will tell if Obama’s quest for change succeeds. I hope it does; Washington needs some revitalization.

I’m proud of Americans for voting yesterday. It’s not just your right, it’s your duty. If you want change in this country you vote for it. We often feel powerless over what’s going on in our world, but voting is the way to have some power over something. So, congratulations America, good job! Hopefully this will start a trend!

So why am I sad? Measures banning same-sex marriage. All three ballot measures passed. In three states, it’s now illegal for homosexuals to get married. In one state, adoption and foster parenting is not legal for unmarried couples (regardless of sexual orientation). So, I’m not gay, why does this make me sad?

  • In Florida the measure banned not only gay marriage, but civil unions, as well. This applies even to heterosexual couples. It has seemed to me, in the past, that people were all up in arms over the semantics of the word MARRIAGE. Like it’s ok for homosexuals to have a civil union, to care for each other, to have medical and decision making rights (among other things I’m leaving out on purpose), but they can’t get MARRIED. Now in Florida, even the semantics have been defeated. What makes me saddest of all about this is that people went out to ban gay marriage and passed a measure that forces heterosexual people to get married to have any rights over the medical care of their significant other, among other things.
  • It is my belief that these measures passed because of people’s religious beliefs. So because a majority of the population considers homosexuality a sin, they have stated that homosexuals can’t get married. This indicates an erosion in the separation of church and state; people are being forced to do something because of the religious beliefs of others. Laws should govern in a secular way, not with religious intent.
  • We live in a REPUBLIC. This means that individual rights are more important than the rights of the majority. So why are there propositions on our ballots that intend to control the rights of the individual through the majority. Amendments and propositions should NOT affect personal rights. It’s illegal to kill someone not because the majority thinks it’s wrong but because you are impinging on the right of the killed individual to live. I just don’t think that measures like this are issues that should be voted on, because they remove individual rights with the votes of the majority. And that’s not what this country is about.
  • Finally, what does allowing gays to be married really do to you? Does it affect anyone outside the people being married? Will the world really go to hell in a handbasket if we acknowledge that two people of the same sex can be in love? Will children start turning gay left and right because they are being exposed to homosexuality? I’m pretty sure this is not the way it works.

    Anyway, those are my thoughts.
