Many Teens Don’t Keep Virginity Pledge

Many Teens Don’t Keep Virginity Pledges

This article reveals some hard truths about statistical interpretation. Depending on the kind of statistical analysis you perform on the same set of data, you can get radically different answers. This study uses the exact same data used for another study, but modifies how a comparison is made.

This method allowed Rosenbaum to compare those who had taken a virginity pledge with similar teens who hadn’t taken a pledge but were likely to delay having sex, she said. She added that she didn’t include teens who were unlikely to take a pledge.

My first thought is, how does she know who is more or less likely to take this pledge? What kind of wacky survey were they filling out.

Regardless of the statistics involved, I feel the article supports my position regarding sex education in schools — namely, there should BE some. Conservatives, religious and otherwise, argue that teaching kids about sex makes them HAVE sex. One study shows that the opposite is true, and that educating kids on the risks involved with sexual contact actually deter them from engaging in it. Again, though, it could just be the interpretation of the statistics.

I tend to agree with that study, though. I think that the more you know about sex and its risks, the less likely you are to engage in it. Not to mention that if you DO decide to have sex, you are more educated and more able to protect yourself.

Again, I must say that we need better education in our schools. Regardless of whether a kid is religious or takes a virginity pledge, they need to understand that sex can lead to AIDS or pregnancy, and that pulling out or using a condom is not completely safe (or is completely UNsafe as in the former). Teenagers aren’t stupid, they are able to make rational decisions, and by denying them all the facts, they are more likely to make unwise decisions. By treating our teenagers like morons, we are keeping them from their full potential and are acting to their detriment. I think this guy sums it all up:

Bill Albert, chief program officer for The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, said teens need to be encouraged to delay having sex, but they also need to be given the facts about safe sex.

Paris Hilton buys a pink Bentley

Paris Hilton Picks Up a Hot Pink Bentley

It also has monogrammed seats, a sparkling “PH” where the usual hood ornament “B” is located and tinted windows – to thwart paparazzi, says the publicity-shy socialite.

Hey, Paris, you know what else would thwart the paparazzi? Buying a car that looks like one someone else MIGHT be driving, so they paparazzi don’t know it’s YOU.

Obama reads history!

Historian sees lessons, Lincoln parallels for Obama

At the end of the article, the interviewer asks

does it give you pleasure that Obama is apparently a reader of history?

The author basically answers yes, which is great. Because it makes me happy that Obama reads history as well. You know what they say “Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.” I hope that Obama reads all the history he can, so that he can learn from the mistakes of others.

I can’t even think of a title for this one

Lesbian’s brutal gang rape investigated

Well, I’m sure this will turn her straight. Way to go, fellas! (That is totally sarcastic, I do not condone in the least what was done to this woman. I find it despicable and horrible, and the men should be sent to prison for a long, long time.)

Obama’s eligibility

December 9, 2008 at 7:27 am (Politics)

Court: No review of Obama’s eligibility to serve

Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth — his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject — he cannot possibly be a “natural born citizen,” one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president.

Why not? The man was born in Hawaii in 1961. (Hawaii became a U.S. Territory in 1900 and a U.S. State in 1959.) To a woman with American citizenship. Even if he had dual citizenship, or triple citizenship:

Berg says Obama also may be a citizen of Indonesia, where he lived as a boy.

The Constitution says you have to be a natural born citizen of the U.S. not a natural born citizen of the U.S. with no citizenship in any other country.

I wonder if the people contesting his presidency even voted. Let it go, people. He won. The end.

Americans, you are greedy bastards

December 3, 2008 at 8:04 am (General)

Customers injured in crush suing Wal-Mart

Are you kidding me people? You get up at 5 AM to run down to the Wal-Mart to save a buck on your flat panel TV that you don’t need and can’t afford, you get into the mindset of a crowd, trample a man to death and now you want Wal-Mart to compensate you for it? Are you kidding me?! Why don’t you take some responsibility for your own actions? You, too, were involved in this! And since when is it Wal-Mart’s job to protect you while shopping? Do we need to start putting “Shop at Own Risk” signs outside our retailers? Do you need to sign a liability waiver when you shop someplace?! Good Lord, people, stop with the litigation!

The lawsuit alleges that the Mesadieus’ injuries were a result of “carelessness, recklessness, negligence.”

On whose part? Really, Wal-Mart was negligent for OPENING THEIR DOORS?! Yes, those rat-bastards, let’s take them for all they’ve got!

Merry Christmas.

Another stimulus bill

December 2, 2008 at 7:57 am (Economy, Politics)

House to push $500 billion stimulus bill

I was all ready to be angry about this. I thought, “Goodness, gracious, Washington, people don’t need $500 handouts, they need JOBS. This stimulus thing you’ve been doing is STUPID.”

Then I read the article. And the proposed stimuli are tax cuts, funding for road and bridge projects, expanded aid to states and investment in renewable energy sources. Then I thought, “Thank GOODNESS, finally Washington is getting something RIGHT.” All of these things are helpful to the American economy (sending every person in the US $500 is NOT). Let’s think about this.

Tax cuts for the middle class: Well, ok, I don’t really get this one. I don’t think with what will have become a $1,218,000,000 bailout of the US economy ($500 billion in stimulus, $700 billion for the mortgage crisis and $18 billion for AIG, and that’s just what I remember) we should be cutting taxes. The Federal Government is going to need that money.

Infrastructure projects: Better/larger roads and bridges means reduced traffic congestion, means less dependence on foreign oil, means that you can spend more time with your family and friends working on making the world a better place. It also means more jobs for skilled and unskilled labor, engineers, contractors, masons, etc. This is incredibly far reaching. More people have decent paying jobs, meaning they have more money to buy things (for example new cars or houses), which helps bail out ailing markets. Not to mention it’s less likely that bridges will collapse during rush hour traffic.

Renewable Energy Research: If we can come up with an alternative to fossil fuels, we will be completely independent. We can leave Iraq in shambles and not care about it. We could really destroy them to put an end to all this terrorist mumbo-jumbo, rather than try to play Mr. Nice-guy-we-need-your-oil. But, that’s a whole other story… Not to mention the impact on Global Warming, energy bills, etc.

So finally, the government is getting something right. Go US!

Hey guys, Bush is SORRY!

December 2, 2008 at 7:46 am (Economy, Politics)

Bush sorry economic crisis has cut jobs, 401(k)s

Aww, poor president Bush. All alone in the White House making $400,000 a year (that’s just his presidential salary; I’m sure he’s got some money coming from other places, too). He’s sorry for us poor little Americans who are being screwed by this economic crisis. But, wait, let’s think about this. He received information in 2006 that the housing bubble was going to burst. Beyond that he received specific information on HOW the housing bubble was going to burst. Industry insiders were even urging regulation of mortgage loans. And yet the Bush administration did… NOTHING. A couple of months ago the leader of the treasury got together with Congress and some other guys and created a bailout plan for this mortgage fiasco. And Bush… oh right, there was that 15 minute speech about nothing that he gave. But other than that, he’s said… NOTHING. So, you know what, president Bush, I don’t buy it. You had ample opportunity to show leadership and resolve in making people’s lives better, and you did… NOTHING. Thank goodness you’re leaving office, now maybe we can get some REAL leadership in the nation’s capital.
